BARRY GOULD NAMED BOARD DIRECTOR AND TREASURER OF THE SAMANTHA FOUNDATION
Organization is Dedicated to Preventing Child Injuries in the Home
MIAMI, Fla., Sept. 12, 2007 - Barry Gould, CPA, partner at Miami-based accounting firm Mallah Furman, has been appointed as a member of the Board of Directors and Treasurer of The Samantha Foundation (TSF).
Katie and Mark Kessler founded the organization in honor of their two-year-old daughter, Samantha, who lost her life in a home accident involving window blind cords.
"No parent should have to go through what Katie and Mark experienced," said Gould. "Yet, the fact is that nationally, unintentional injury is the leading cause of death for children ages 14 and under. Through our initiatives, we are educating parents and caregivers about all of the hidden dangers in the home and how to put a stop to these tragedies."
Established in 2002, one of the Foundation's programs includes the distribution of kits containing childproofing devices, such as outlet covers, cabinet latches, window blind cleats and doorknob covers. The Child Home Safety Project was launched this past spring with a demonstration at the Dorothy M. Wallace COPE Center, a public school for teenage mothers ranging from ages 13-18. More than 100 girls went through the Foundation's injury prevention curriculum and received safety kits.
TSF is also organizing home safety events with, to name a few, the Miami-Dade County Public Schools' Parent Academy, United Way School and Baptist Health Systems. Other initiatives include the development of the Aquatic Water Safety Program (ASAP) and working to become a national resource for Internet, print and video education materials on child home safety.
The organization holds an annual golf tournament fund-raiser at Westview Country Club, and has raised $150,000 to date through its first two events.

In addition to Gould, newly appointed board members include Terri Mason, board chair who brings experience as a leader in the non-profit world from her hometown of St. Louis, MO; Jeffrey Miller, president of Weeks Gas & Generators; Dr. Judy Schaechter, associate professor of pediatrics at University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine and director of the Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Miami; Robert Boyers, Esq., founding shareholder of Hannon & Boyers, P.A.; Sandra Perdomo, special events coordinator of Athletics at FIU; and Monica Schatz, owner of Monica's Kitchen Catering.
Gould, who graduated from the University of Florida with a Masters of Science Degree from the Fisher School of Accounting in 1995, has 11 years of experience providing services in financial reporting, business counseling, tax planning, federal and multi-state reporting, estate tax and gift planning.
